Mumbai to Goa Road Trip Guide
12 min read · Updated July 2026
The Mumbai to Goa drive is one of India's most scenic coastal routes — 590 km of highway through the Western Ghats, past palm-fringed beaches, and into the laid-back vibe of North Goa. Whether you are driving an Innova with the family or taking the wheel yourself, this guide covers everything you need to know.
Best Time to Drive
October to February is ideal — dry roads, pleasant temperatures, and clear skies. Monsoon (June to September) is beautiful but the ghat sections near Karjat and Lonavala can be slippery. If you must drive in monsoon, choose a vehicle with good ground clearance.
Route Overview
Mumbai → NH48 → Karjat → Lonavala → Pune bypass (optional) → Ratnagiri → Mapusa → Mapusa Bazaar (North Goa) or Panaji (Central Goa). Total distance: 590 km one way.
Key Stops
- Karjat (60 km) — First ghat section. Stop at a dhaba for chai and vada pav.
- Lonavala (90 km) — Famous for chikki shops and the Bhushi Dam.
- Kamshet (110 km) — Paragliding capital of India. Stop and watch gliders.
- Ratnagiri (240 km) — Last major town before the Konkan coast. Fresh fish available.
- Goa border (350 km) — The famous Goa Welcome board. Perfect photo op.
